Canyon Vista Medical Center Spearheads Naloxone Distribution Program in Cochise County to Combat Opioid Crisis

(CVMC) is proud to announce its pivotal role as the inaugural distributor of the Naloxone Distribution Program (NDP) in Cochise County, Arizona. With a commitment to addressing the opioid epidemic, CVMC is at the forefront of combating opioid use disorder and overdose.

Hospitals and emergency departments play a crucial role in not only providing emergency care but also in serving as primary healthcare providers for individuals with opioid use disorder. Acknowledging the critical need for intervention during overdose events, the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) has established the Naloxone Distribution Program (NDP).

The NDP ensures that individuals at risk of an opioid overdose receive a take-home naloxone kit before being discharged from the hospital or emergency department. Naloxone, a life-saving medication, can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, providing a vital bridge to subsequent treatment and community resources.

In 2023, CVMC witnessed 126 overdose patients in its Emergency Department, highlighting the pressing need for proactive measures to address the escalating crisis. Nationally, in 2021 alone, there were a staggering 107,000 drug overdose deaths in the United States, with over 75% of these incidents involving opioids. The grim reality persists as an average of 90 people succumb to opioid overdoses daily.

CVMC is honored to take the lead in implementing this groundbreaking initiative in Cochise County. By actively participating in the Naloxone Distribution Program, CVMC aims to make a significant impact in the fight against opioid use disorder and overdose within the local community.

Amanda Mancini, Director of Emergency Services, expressed enthusiasm about the program, stating, "We recognize the urgency of addressing the opioid crisis, and our involvement in the Naloxone Distribution Program underscores our commitment to the well-being of our community. By distributing naloxone kits, we empower individuals to play a role in saving lives and connecting those in need with essential resources."
